The zinc mines of Allmannajuvet in Sauda, on the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke, were worked from 1881 to 1899, and 12,000 tonnes of zinc ore came out of the gorge in those years. Today the mining area is a museum.
The architect Peter Zumthor designed a gallery, a café building and a toilet building in a plain industrial style that tells the story of the mines; the toilet building stands on a solid dry-stone wall. Paths and stairs connect them in the gorge.
In the summer season the café and gallery are open and there are guided tours along the old mining road and into the mine, with helmet and torch provided; wear good shoes. Check the current opening hours and prices before you go.
Good to know: the toilets are open from early March to early December. Emptying the toilet of a camper or caravan is not allowed here.
