About
Nusfjord on the south side of Flakstadøya is one of the oldest and best-preserved fishing villages in Norway: red and ochre rorbuer, the fishermen’s cabins, and old work buildings around a narrow harbour between steep mountains. In its golden age more than 600.000 fish hung on the drying racks at once, and in the early 20th century more than 1.500 fishermen came here for the season. In 1975 Nusfjord was chosen as Norway’s contribution to the European Architectural Heritage Year.
Today about 30 rorbuer have been restored as Nusfjord Arctic Resort, with cafés and a restaurant, and the Gallery Salteriet shows art in the old salting house. The village is quiet in winter and comes alive in summer – the midnight sun in summer, the Northern Lights in autumn and winter.
Getting there: Nusfjord lies 6,2 km off the E10 on a small side road along the fjord – there was no road at all until the 1960s. Other places in Lofoten in our guide: Reinebringen and Kvalvika.
