NORWAY'S CAMPER RENTAL SINCE 2014

Pasvik Valley and Høyde 96

Landmark / POI

About

South of Kirkenes, the Pasvik Valley runs about 100 km along the Pasvik river, which forms the border with Russia. Instead of mountains and fjords you find pine forest, bogs and lakes – a landscape that feels like Finland or Siberia. Pasvik has Norway’s densest brown bear population (you are very unlikely to meet one) and more than 220 bird species. At its southern end lies Øvre Pasvik National Park (119 km², a certified Dark Sky Park since 2024).

Høyde 96: the Cold War observation tower, built in 1952, looks out over the border landscape to the Russian town of Nikel. In summer there is a mini café with souvenirs; opening times are posted on its Facebook page. Nearby there is a bird-watching tower at Skrøytnes.

Svanhovd visitor centre (NIBIO): exhibitions and information about the valley, with a botanical garden – in summer (mid-June to mid-August) open Mon–Fri 9–20 and weekends 10–18, in winter Mon–Fri 9–15. The pin marks Svanhovd.

Tips for campers: from Kirkenes take the E6 to Hesseng and turn off into the valley, which runs some 100 km to Nyrud. Respect the border: crossing it, even by a step, leads to heavy fines. In the valley in our guide: Øvre Pasvik Camping.
