Saltstraumen, 33 km from the centre of Bodø, is among the strongest tidal currents in the world. Every six hours some 400 million m³ of water is pressed through a strait 3 km long and only 150 metres wide, at up to 20 knots. Whirlpools up to 10 metres across and 4–5 metres deep form and disappear again in the current.
When to come: the whirlpools depend on the tide – come at the wrong time and the water is calm. The current is at its strongest around the change of the tide, so check the tide table (on visitbodo.com) before you go.
Tips for campers: a bridge spans Saltstraumen, and the car park lies right on the other side. The strait is famous for fishing from land – the world record for a rod-caught saithe was set here – but lures easily get stuck on the kelp and rocks in the strait itself. Diving here is only for experienced divers.
