Seven Sisters – Geirangerfjord

Landmark / POI

About

The Seven Sisters (De syv søstrene, also called Knivsflåfossen) are seven separate streams falling side by side 410 metres down the cliff on the north side of the Geirangerfjord – the tallest has a free fall of 250 metres. They lie about 6,5 km west of Geiranger, in the West Norwegian Fjords World Heritage Site. Right across the fjord falls a single waterfall called the Suitor (Friaren): the legend says he courts the seven sisters in vain, and has taken to the bottle – his waterfall is said to look like one.

How to see them: there is no road to the falls – you see them from the water. The car ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt (about an hour, roughly May to October) passes right by; sightseeing boats and guided kayak trips leave from Geiranger. The deck is wet and windy even on sunny days. In July the ferry queue starts early, so take a morning crossing and check with the operator whether to book ahead.

Good to know: the old mountain farm Knivsflå sits on a ledge just north of the falls, about 240 metres above the fjord – a boat drops you below it and the walk up takes 30–60 minutes. Skageflå farm on the other side can be reached on foot from Geiranger. In early summer, when the snow melts, all seven streams run; later in the summer the smallest may dry up.
