1 / 3The National Tourist Route Sognefjellet runs 108 km between the innermost Sognefjord and the farming valleys of Lom, along the edge of Jotunheimen. At 1434 metres it crosses the highest mountain pass in northern Europe – from green fjord water to a bare, snowy high plateau with glaciers in view, and back down through the meadows of Bøverdalen.
Start and end: the pin marks the start in Gaupne on the Lustrafjord, where the Fv55 begins – the direction of Nasjonale turistveger’s route file. The route ends in Lom. You can drive it either way.
Stops on the way: Liasanden, Vegaskjelet, Sognefjellshytta, Mefjellet – a wheelchair-accessible rest area at the crossroads in the middle of the plateau, with a view of the Fannaråken glacier and Knut Wold’s stone sculpture – and Oscarshaug and Nedre Oscarshaug above Bøverdalen. Turtagrø, below the pass on the fjord side, is a classic starting point for hikes in Hurrungane.
Tips for campers: Check before you go: the road reports further down this page show live what is reported along the whole route, and the map with the road conditions shows closures in red. the road over the mountain between Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet and Turtagrø is closed in winter – it has closed between mid-November and mid-December and opened between mid-April and early May, and it can close at night and in bad weather after opening. In early summer there are often snow walls at the top, so bring warm clothes. Emptying toilets is not allowed at the rest areas; the nearest dump stations are in Gaupne, Lom and Vågåmo.
