About

Between 1600 and 1692, 91 people were sentenced to death by fire in the witch trials of Finnmark. The Steilneset Memorial in Vardø remembers them: a long, narrow memorial hall by the architect Peter Zumthor, with 91 small windows, each lit by a single bulb and telling the story of one person – and beside it a glass room with the artist Louise Bourgeois’s installation of a burning chair, reflected in mirrors. Queen Sonja opened the memorial on 23 June 2011.

Visiting: the memorial is always open but unstaffed, and it is wheelchair accessible. Outside the season, guided visits can be booked at least three days ahead with the Varanger Museum. It is part of the National Tourist Route Varanger.

Tips for campers: in Vardø, combine it with Vardøhus Fortress and the Tusenårsstien path; the route continues north to Hamningberg.
