Træna – Helgeland

Landmark / POI

About

Træna lies far out in the sea, roughly in the middle of the Helgeland coast, north of Lovund and south of Myken: a small community on a few islands, with the jagged peaks of Sanna rising behind the harbour of Husøy. Every July the islands Husøy and Sanna host the Træna Festival.

What to do: the Kjærlighetsstien path around Sanna passes the cave Kirkhelleren – a lovely walk on a fine day; plan it around the express boat timetable. Gompen is an easy but spectacular little summit hike to the old radar station on Sanna, and a culture walk shows Husøya.

Getting there: a ferry runs from Stokkvågen to Husøy and Selvær (it only goes to Selvær if there are vehicles for it). In summer the Nordlandsekspressen stops here on its way between Bodø and Myken, and the Helgelandspendelen runs all year from Sandnessjøen, Nesna, Stokkvågen, Onøy or Lovund.

Tips for campers: there are few roads and little parking on the islands – we recommend leaving the camper on the mainland and going over on foot. If you do bring it, ask about space between the shop and Træna church, or at the pier of the Træna Coastal Association, which has toilets and a waste disposal station. Tents may stand at least 150 metres from houses and cabins.
