1 / 5Tvindefossen (also written Tvinnefossen) spreads over a stepped cliff in dozens of small cascades, about 12 km north of Vossevangen beside the E16 towards Gudvangen and Flåm. It is often said to be 152 metres high, but measures 116 metres, and is fed by the small Kroelvi stream. The painter J. C. Dahl painted it in 1830. In the late 1990s its water got a reputation for keeping you young, and hundreds of thousands of visitors a year came to fill bottles here.
Tips for campers: it is a 15-minute stop between Bergen and Flåm – you see the falls from the road and the field below, and can walk right up to the foot. Tvinde Camping lies at the foot of the waterfall, so you can also stay the night with the falls in view. The water runs strongest in spring and early summer, when the snow melts.
