About

The Vega archipelago (Vegaøyan) is a cluster of around 6.500 small islands, islets and skerries around the main island of Vega, just south of the Arctic Circle. People have lived here since the Stone Age, and the islands have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. To this day the islanders build small houses for the thousands of eider ducks that nest here every year – a tradition you meet all over the archipelago.

The Vega Stairs: on the main island, a short marked path leads to about 2.000 stone steps that climb to a 450 metre summit, with a view over the islands and the sea; a via ferrata with a “Nepal bridge” crosses the stairs. Base Camp Vega, right by the stairs, has small cabins inspired by the eider houses and spots for tents.

Tips for campers: Vega is an island, so plan the ferry crossing from the mainland and check the timetables before you go. The pin marks Gladstad, the main village. Good to combine with Torghatten near Brønnøysund.
