Vøringsfossen is one of Norway's best-known sights: the water plunges 182 metres from the Hardangervidda plateau into the Måbødalen valley, and when the river is high it is loud. It is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route Hardangervidda.
More than a kilometre of well-secured paths, several viewpoints, large and small bridges, two service buildings and big car parks let you see the waterfall from new angles. The upper area at Fossli and the lower one at Fossatromma are linked by a spectacular step bridge over the river Bjoreio and by the old pack road. The new service building at Fossatromma, designed by Hølmebakk Øymo, opened in September 2024, and one of the car parks has chargers for electric cars.
Good to know: the toilets at Fossatromma and Fossli are normally open from April to November, and parts of the area are closed in winter. Emptying the toilet of a camper or caravan is not allowed here.
