Grense Jakobselv lies at the mouth of the Jakobselva river, which forms the border between Norway and Russia, on the Barents Sea. Small beaches alternate with rocks, and the yellow border posts stand along the river. Right by it stands the King Oscar II Chapel, a neo-Gothic stone church built in 1869 (architect J. W. Nordan) with room for about 70 people; it took the king’s name after his visit in 1873.
Getting there: the place lies at the end of a 60 km gravel road from Kirkenes – bumpy, open in summer and closed in winter. Check the road before you go, and allow time.
Border rules: you may photograph the border posts, but not military installations such as border towers and buildings. It is forbidden to photograph, approach or contact people on the Russian side. Only Norwegians may fish in the river. Norwegian border guards patrol the area.
Tips for campers: combine it with a trip into the Pasvik Valley.
