Hardangervidda Scenic Route

Landmark / POI

About

The National Tourist Route Hardangervidda follows Rv7 for 67 km between the Hardangerfjord and the high plateau – a journey of contrasts from the village of Eidfjord at the head of the fjord, up the narrow, steep Måbødalen valley past Vøringsfossen, and onto the vast, open Hardangervidda at up to 1250 metres.

Start and end: the pin marks the start in Eidfjord – the direction of Nasjonale turistveger’s route file. The route ends at Haugastøl; coming from Oslo you meet it there first. You can drive it either way.

Stops on the way: Måbø Bridge rest area, Vøringsfossen with its paths, viewpoints and step bridge, Ørteren and Vardestopp up on the plateau. In summer small car parks along the road are the starting points for hikes – tall poles beside the road show how deep the snow gets in winter.

Tips for campers: Check before you go: the road reports further down this page show live what is reported along the whole route, and the map with the road conditions shows closures in red. this route is open all year, but in winter there is often convoy driving behind a snowplough, and the road over the plateau can close for short periods in bad weather or to let the reindeer graze in peace. The weather can change fast even in summer. Rv7 is a busy main road between east and west, so take your time and use the rest areas – the plateau is best explored on foot. Vøringsfossen is closed in winter. The nearest dump station is at Øvre Eidfjord; emptying toilets is not allowed at the rest areas.
