Henningsvær is built on a handful of low, rocky islands off the southern tip of Austvågøya, a short drive west of Svolvær in Lofoten. You get there over the Henningsvær bridges, which hop from islet to islet, and the road ends in a fishing village packed along a narrow sound, with wooden quays on both sides, stockfish racks on the knolls and the grey wall of Vågakallen rising to the north-east. Until the bridges opened in 1983, the only way in was by boat. About 500 people live here, most of them on the two main islands, Heimøya and Hellandsøya.
Stockfish is still what Henningsvær ships out, but in summer the village lives just as much from visitors, with rorbuer, cafés and galleries along the water. The sun stays up around the clock from about 26 May to 17 July and doesn't show itself at all from 8 December to 4 January.
Local knowledge: the name is simply the man's name Henning plus vær, fishing village, first written down in 1567. Even so, only four people lived here all year in 1769. What changed that was the cod, and one man. Henrik Drejer bought the whole fishing village in 1842 for 6.000 speciedaler, and under him Henningsvær got a sick bay, a fishery doctor, a chapel and a lighthouse. He had no heirs, and when he died in 1882 the county bought the place to keep it out of foreign hands. In 1934 a breakwater joined the two main islands and sheltered the harbour. After the war up to 20.000 fishermen came to the Lofoten fishery, and as many as a quarter of them stayed in Henningsvær. In 2022 the state protected the old village, on the condition that it keeps working as a place with homes, fishing and shops.
Born here: singer Sondre Justad (born 1990) sings pop in his northern Norwegian dialect, and his "Riv i hjertet" was the most played Norwegian-language song on Norwegian radio in 2015.
Visiting: the pin is on Dreyers gate, the street that follows the sound through the village. Walk south to the football pitch on its own bare rock island, with sea on all sides, the one drone photos have made famous. Climbers meet at Klatrekafeen before heading for the walls around Vågakallen, 943 metres. It was first climbed around 1885, and in the old days a boy on his first winter fishery was expected to take his cap off to the mountain. On a rainy day, go to Galleri Lofoten on the quay, with paintings by Otto Sinding, Gunnar Berg and Adelsteen Normann downstairs and an exhibition about Henningsvær and the tools of the Lofoten fishery.
