Kilpisjärvi is the village at the very tip of Finland's north-west arm, where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet. From our depot in Tromsø it is about two and a half hours along the E8, up through Skibotndalen and over the border. The fell Saana rises straight above the village, and the open tundra starts right behind it.
Kilpissafarit is the family business behind much of what happens outdoors here. Border guard Hannu Rauhala started it in 1995, and today his son Jussi runs it. We have rented snowmobiles from Jussi ourselves several times to explore the region. He is a great guy, the service is good and the snowmobiles are well maintained. Since then we send our guests to him with a clear conscience, because his guides know the fells, the trails and the weather up here better than anyone.
Winter (late November to May) is snowmobile time. You can drive your own sled, share one or sit in the warm sleigh behind the guide. Our favourites:
Summer and autumn (June to October) bring a boat trip and hike to the three-country cairn, guided hikes up Saana and Halti, e-fatbike tours on the tundra, a minibus trip to the Arctic Ocean on the Norwegian side and, from September, northern lights by minibus. The rental shop in the Safari House is open every day from 10 to 18, with snowmobiles (from February), e-fatbikes, snowshoes, canoes and kayaks.
5 % for Arctic Campers guests on all guided tours. Show your Arctic Campers keyring badge.
