In the Tromsø Backyard Ultra every runner covers a 6,706-metre lap every hour. A new lap starts on the hour and must be finished within that hour; whoever does not make it is out. The lap length is chosen so that the laps add up to known distances: 4 laps are more than a half marathon, 7 laps more than a marathon, 15 laps more than 100 km and 24 laps 100 miles.
Simple in concept and very hard in practice, it is also a social race: the runners gather before every lap and cheer each other on.
