Vain kaksi kalaa ("only two fish") is the legendary ice-fishing event at Kilpisjärvi in Finnish Lapland, held every year in early May over three days. It is the liveliest weekend of the year in the village. The competition takes place on the ice of Kilpisjärvi lake, right by the village centre and the small-boat harbour.
It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and great prizes, and, as the name says, the catch is usually modest. Many people come just to enjoy the atmosphere.
With a camper: the village cannot house everyone, so during the event you may exceptionally stay overnight in your own motorhome or caravan in the village centre. The organiser's campsite takes no advance bookings that weekend; pitches go to whoever comes first. Book rooms and cabins well ahead.
