Geiranger–Trollstigen Scenic Route

Landmark / POI

About

The National Tourist Route Geiranger–Trollstigen is 104 km of Western Norway at its most dramatic: from the mountains above Geiranger down to the fjord, across Storfjorden by ferry (Eidsdal–Linge), through the strawberry farms of Valldal and up and over Trollstigen with its eleven hairpin bends, down into Romsdalen. The highest point is 1038 metres.

Start and end: the pin marks the start at Langvatnet, where the road (Fv63) leaves Rv15 – the direction Nasjonale turistveger uses. The route ends at Sogge bru in Romsdalen near Åndalsnes. You can drive it either way.

Stops on the way: Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen with the view down the Geirangerfjord, Linge ferry quay, Gudbrandsjuvet gorge and the Trollstigen viewpoint at the top of the hairpins. From Geiranger the ferry to Hellesylt passes the Seven Sisters – book that ferry ahead in summer.

Tips for campers: Check before you go: the road reports further down this page show live what is reported along the whole route, and the map with the road conditions shows closures in red. Trollstigen is narrow with many bends, and buses longer than 13,3 metres are not allowed. The road is closed in winter: Trollstigen has opened between late April and mid-June and closed between early October and early December; Langvatnet–Geiranger between late April and mid-June, closing from mid-November. After opening it can still close at night and in bad weather. Traffic is heavy in high season – early June or September is calmer, and early morning or evening is best. Fog often hides the views, so keep a spare day if you can. Emptying toilets is not allowed at the rest areas; the nearest dump stations are in Isterdalen, Valldal and Geiranger.
