Gorsa Canyon and Gorzifossen Waterfall – Kåfjorddalen

Waterfall Not in season

About

Kåfjorddalen in Kåfjord, Troms, is cut by deep canyons. At the Gorsa canyon the river Guolasjohka drops into the gorge in the waterfall Gorzifossen (also called Storfossen), about 120–140 metres high, and since 2011 a footbridge, Gorsabrua, has spanned the 153 metre deep canyon right beside it. In summer there is even bungee jumping from the bridge.

Getting there: turn off the E6 at Birtavarre and drive into Kåfjorddalen; after about 8 km the road becomes bumpy gravel (watch out for sheep). The car park at Ankerlia (paid, with toilets and information boards) is the start of the walk to the bridge: about 2 km, roughly 20–30 minutes each way. A smaller car park further up the road is closer to the bridge.

A bit of history: the walk passes the remains of the old copper mines, closed in 1918 – mine entrances in the cliffs, the ruins of a power station and the supports of the old water pipe.

Tips for campers: a summer destination – in winter the road is only cleared as far as Ankerlia. The gravel road can be rough: drive slowly, and with a larger camper think twice before going all the way. From mid/late June to around the end of September the gravel road continues up to Guolasjávri, a starting point for hikes in the mountains.
