Mollisfossen – Reisa National Park

Waterfall Not in season

About

Mollisfossen (Sámi: Mollešgorži) falls 269 metres in all, the last 140 metres in free fall, from the Mollešjohka river into the Reisaelva in Reisa National Park. The national park calls it the highest waterfall in Northern Norway. At its foot by the river there are benches, a fire pit and a lean-to shelter.

You can't drive to the waterfall. The pin marks Ovi Raishiin at Saraelv, the gateway to the national park at the end of the road, where the riverboats and the trail start – set your directions there. From Storslett follow Fv865 up Reisadalen (about 48 km), then the gravel road to Saraelv; the last 700 metres are a forest road. Ovi Raishiin has parking (when the ground is dry), toilets and fire pits; in winter, park at the end of the road at Saraelv.

From Saraelv the waterfall is about 19 km up the valley. Going there by traditional riverboat up the Reisaelva is part of the experience: about 1 hour each way, 3–4 hours in total, from 1 June to 15 October depending on the water level. Book ahead and bring warm, waterproof clothes. On foot it is a long day or an overnight hike; in winter only by ski or dog sled.

Tips for campers: about 500 metres north of Saraelv a small car park is the start of a short walk to Sarafossen (about 120 m high, around 1 km each way). In the national park, campfires in forest and open country are banned from 15 April to 15 September, and dogs must be on a lead from 1 April to 20 August. The Halti national park centre in Storslett has information and exhibitions.
