About

The E10 comes down the north-west side of Flakstadøya and runs right along the back of Rambergstranda, a long curve of white sand. On a sunny day the water over the sand turns green and turquoise, and behind the red and yellow houses the peaks stand in a jagged row. Ramberg is small, but it's the centre of Flakstad municipality, with the council offices, the library, a shop and a petrol station. In 2016 Store norske leksikon counted 318 people here, including the neighbours at Justnes and around the church.

Flakstad lives from the sea. One job in five in the municipality is in fishing, and stockfish hangs on the racks outside the village in spring. The name is plain speaking: ravn, raven, and berg, because the village lies under a steep mountainside. From about 27 May to 17 July the sun doesn't go down, and from 9 December to 3 January it doesn't come up.

Local knowledge: just north-east of Ramberg, on the flat land at Flakstad, stands the red Flakstad church. There has been a church on this spot since at least 1430, but around 1780 a storm wrecked the old one. The new church, consecrated in 1780, was built of timber from Russia, which people here got in exchange for fish, and that is why the roof turret has an onion dome. The weather wasn't done with it. In 1874 a hurricane blew the tower off, and it stood on the ground next to the church until it went back up on the roof in 1938. Gina Krog, who led the fight for women's right to vote in Norway, was born in Flakstad in 1847, the daughter of the parish priest.

Our own story: Arctic Campers began here. Henning and Mike were running the guesthouse Friisgarden in Ramberg together when, over a beer in the midnight sun, they had an idea: Northern Norway needed a camper rental with small vans. The big motorhomes kept running into trouble on Lofoten's narrow roads, and a small van suits them so much better. In 2014 they started Arctic Campers right here, with five converted Caddys and Berlingos for travellers exploring Lofoten. The rest is history. Ramberg will always be a special place for us.

Visiting: the pin is in the middle of the village, a few steps from the beach. Ramberg is right next to Lofotodden National Park, set up in 2018, with steep peaks, scree and sandy bays facing the open sea. The beach at Kvalvika is a popular hike, and you can add the top of Ryten, 543 metres, on the way. On the south side of the island, Nusfjord is Flakstad's best-known fishing village, with old buildings that have been kept well. If you want to try surfing in the Arctic, Lofoten Beach Camp on the beach towards Flakstad rents out boards and gives lessons. On a rainy day, drive over to Vestvågøya for a swim at Lofoten Arena in Leknes.
