Down with the whales

Winter in the fjords around the city of Tromsø is the ideal time for whale watching. Over the past few years, several of our camper guests have been fortunate enough to spot Humpback and Killer Whales (Orcas) from the shore. These whales are in the area to chase herring, as schools of these small fish are currently abundant throughout the fjords. Our friend Kari, with whom we shared an office during the early days of Arctic Campers in Lofoten, took the opportunity to venture out with a SUP (Stand-Up-Paddling) and swim with the Orcas. She captured some incredible footage while braving the icy waters.

Join Kari to surf with the whales

Kari Schibevaag is doing this on a regular basis. This time she spend some days in Tromsø, going around in one of our campers to find out where they hang out those days. In this video she spotted the whales close to Skjervøy.

Whale watching in a Camper Van

You may not be as brave as Kari to swim with them, but if you still want to enjoy some whale watching from the shore, it's easily doable while on the road with the camper. When you pick up your camper van at our rental station in Tromsø, we'll provide you with updates on recent Orca and Humpback whale sightings. Simply park your camper and keep an eye out for some whale action. Often, you can hear their distinctive breathing sounds before spotting them in the water. The unique noise of whales exhaling as they surface is quite remarkable and recognizable even from a distance.

Two things which are good to do in the winter - Chasing Northern Lights (link) in the night and do some serious whale watching in the day time - you might not catch a lot of sleep ;)
