Atlanterhavsvegen – The Atlantic Road

Landmark / POI

About

The Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsvegen) is 8,3 km of road that hops from islet to islet across the open sea between Kårvåg on Averøy and Vevang, on eight bridges. The best known, Storseisundbrua, rises 23 metres above the water and seems to end in mid-air as you drive up. Opened in 1989, it was voted Norway’s construction of the century, and it is part of the National Tourist Route from Kårvåg to Bud (36 km).

Stops along the way: Geitøya, Eldhusøya, Myrbærholmbrua, Hågå, Farstadsanden, Askevågen, Kjeksa.

Tips for campers: the car parks around Storseisundbrua fill up quickly in summer and lie right beside the road – come early in the morning or in the evening. Many campers stay overnight in the larger car parks, but some are signposted as no overnight stay, so check the signs. Emptying motorhome toilets is not allowed at the rest areas. On windy days drive slowly over the bridges; in autumn storms the waves can wash over the road.

Good to know: the road is open all year and free of tolls. From Kristiansund you reach it through the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel, almost 6 km under the sea. In Bud, at the western end, the Ergan coastal fort, the Drågen smokehouse and boat trips to Bjørnsund are worth a stop; in Kårvåg, Bjartmars Favorittkro serves coffee with a view of the road.
