About

Hammerfest is packed around a bay on the west side of Kvaløya, with a harbour that stays free of ice all winter. The centre sits right under Salen, the steep hill with a stone cairn on top, and the streets, laid out when the town was rebuilt after the war, run in straight lines along the water. Fishing built Hammerfest, and boats, fish plants and the supply base for the Barents Sea still keep it busy. Just outside town, the plant on Melkøya has handled gas from the Snøhvit field since 2007.

About 8.055 people live here. For some 200 years Hammerfest was known as the world's northernmost town, until Honningsvåg got town status in 1996. The midnight sun lasts from about 14 May to 29 July, the polar night from 23 November to 19 January.

Local knowledge: Hammerfest became a kjøpstad, a trading town, on 17 July 1789, the same day as Vardø. The name is Old Norse: hamarr is a steep rock face and festr a mooring rope, an old anchorage under the cliff. The moment that set it apart came after the fire of 1890, which started in a bakery and destroyed a large part of the wooden town. While rebuilding, Hammerfest got Norway's first municipal power station, and in 1891 it became the first town in Norway with electric street lights. All of that burned in the winter of 1944–45, when the retreating Germans left only a small funeral chapel standing.

Born here: Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm (1866–1939), son of Kven parents, cooked for Amundsen on the Gjøa and on the South Pole expedition, and Amundsen wrote that no man had done more for Norway's polar expeditions. Fred Børre Lundberg (born 1969) was born here, grew up in Bardu and won Olympic gold in Nordic combined at Lillehammer in 1994.

Visiting: the pin points to Visit Hammerfest's tourist information at Strandgata 29, open all year. It also runs the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, founded in 1963, which you join to prove you have been this far north. The Salen hike follows a zigzag path up to the view over town and islands, and the Tyven hike goes higher. Out at Fuglenes stands the Meridian Column, on the UNESCO list since 2005. On a rainy day, the Museum of Reconstruction in Kirkegata tells how Finnmark was burned and built up again. The food festival Lindstrømfestivalen carries the polar cook's name, and Seiland National Park lies on the island of Seiland nearby. For the night there is Storvannet Camping by the lake Storvannet.
