North-facing beaches such as Flakstad, Kvalvika and Ramberg give the aurora a dark horizon and a foreground of sand and peaks; the fjords around Reine and Hamnøy mirror it on a calm night.

Chasing the aurora in Lofoten by camper

From our Tromsø station it is about six to seven hours by camper to Svolvær, along the E6 and E10. With your own camper you can wait out a cloudy evening and drive to the side of the islands where the sky opens.

Questions about the northern lights in Lofoten

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Lofoten?

From late August to mid-April, whenever it is dark and clear. The darkest weeks around December give the longest nights; September, October, February and March combine good darkness with milder weather.

Is Kp 2 enough for the aurora in Lofoten?

Often yes. Lofoten lies at 68 degrees north, under the auroral oval, so Kp 2 to 3 is usually enough when the sky is dark and clear.

Where in Lofoten can you see the northern lights?

Anywhere away from town lights with a view north: the beaches at Flakstad, Ramberg and Kvalvika, the fjords around Reine and Hamnøy, and Henningsvær. The table on this page gives each of them its chance for the next three nights.
