All our campers have studded tyres in winter, a heater for the nights and an ice scraper and brush. Our 4x4 campers give you extra grip on snowy roads. How sleeping in a camper works in winter: Winter camping.
• Norway has no fixed date for winter tyres. The rule is that the vehicle must have enough grip for the conditions – on snow and ice that means winter tyres or chains.
• Studded tyres are allowed from 1 November to the first Sunday after Easter Monday (4 April 2027), and in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark from 16 October to 30 April. Outside these dates they are allowed when the conditions need them.
• In winter, tyres need at least 3 mm of tread (1,6 mm in summer).

Only three cities charge a fee for driving with studded tyres: Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. For vehicles up to 3.500 kg it costs 35 NOK per day (24 hours), 450 NOK per month or 1.400 NOK per season, and a permit from one city is valid in the other two. Pay before you drive in: in Oslo in the app "Bil i Oslo" or at piggav.no, in Bergen in the app "Parkering i Bergen", in Trondheim in the SmartPark or EasyPark app. The 2026/27 season runs from 1 November 2026 to 4 April 2027.
Our Oslo Airport station is outside the city of Oslo: you only pay if you drive into Oslo. Tromsø has no studded tyre fee.
After heavy snow or in storms, mountain passes can close or open only for convoy driving (kolonnekjøring): a snowplough drives in front, often one behind, and the cars follow. In a convoy:
• switch on the hazard lights, keep the car in front in sight and keep a steady speed;
• never leave the convoy or turn round, and stay with your camper if the convoy stops;
• start with a full tank, warm clothes, food and a hot drink.
Never drive past a closed barrier. Which passes are affected: Mountain passes and winter closures.
• Our road conditions map and road cameras in the Camper Guide.
• Statens vegvesen: phone 175 in Norway, +47 22 175 175 from abroad, vegvesen.no/trafikk and the app "Vegvesen trafikk".
• Weather on the passes: yr.no mountain passes.
In Tromsø the sun stays below the horizon from about 27 November to 15 January (polar night). It is not dark all day – there are a few hours of twilight around noon – but plan your driving for the light hours, and watch out for animals in the dark.
• Drive slower than the limit on icy roads and keep a long distance.
• Fill up before mountain passes and long empty stretches: in a convoy you may stand still for a long time.
• Check the forecast and the road status every morning.
