Main Roads in Norway: E6, E39, E10 and More

Most camper trips in Norway use a handful of main roads. Here is what to expect on each. Live status of all of them: our road conditions map.

E6 – from the south to the far north

E6 is Norway's backbone: 2.576 km from Svinesund on the Swedish border to Kirkenes, past Oslo, Oslo Airport, Lillehammer, Trondheim, Mo i Rana, Narvik and Alta. It passes right by our Oslo Airport station, and Tromsø is reached from E6 at Nordkjosbotn. Its highest point is on Dovrefjell (1.026 m), and the only ferry left on it is Bognes – Skarberget (about 25 minutes). In winter, Saltfjellet and other mountain stretches can have convoys.

E39 – the coastal road in the west

E39 runs along the west coast from Kristiansand via Stavanger, Bergen and Ålesund to Trondheim. It is beautiful and slow: the main route still has seven ferry crossings. The first big project to replace them, the Rogfast tunnel near Stavanger, is expected to open in 2033.

E10 – Lofoten

In Norway, E10 runs 397 km from Å at the tip of Lofoten to Bjørnfjell on the Swedish border. Since 2007 the Lofast connection links Lofoten with the mainland without a ferry. The Lofoten section is a National Tourist Route: there, the toilets at rest areas may not be used for emptying camper toilets – use the dump stations, for example in Reine, Hamnøy, Ramberg, Leknes or Svolvær. E16 – Oslo to Bergen via Lærdal

E16 crosses the mountains at Filefjell, one of the most reliable passes in winter, and runs through the 24,5 km Lærdal tunnel. From 16 November 2026 the tunnel is closed at night (18:00–06:00) during upgrade works expected to last until about 2030/31; only scheduled buses pass at set times. Details: Statens vegvesen. E8 – Tromsø to Finland

From Tromsø, E8 runs 161,5 km through Skibotndalen to the Finnish border at Kilpisjärvi – the road to Finnish Lapland.

E134 and Rv7 – the other roads west

E134 crosses Haukelifjell (highest point 1.085 m) on the way to Haugesund. Rv7 crosses Hardangervidda (highest point 1.250 m) to Eidfjord and the Hardanger Bridge. Both are open in winter but can close or have convoys in bad weather – Rv7 more often. More in Mountain passes.
