Oslo to Tromsø by Camper: One-Way

The great Norway road trip: pick up your camper at our Oslo Airport station and drop it off in Tromsø – or the other way round. A one-way rental has a relocation fee of 15.000 NOK; sometimes we offer the trip with a reduced or no fee: see our one-way offers.

Route 1: all the way on E6

About 1.600 km from our Oslo station to Tromsø. E6 takes you through Gudbrandsdalen, over Dovrefjell to Trondheim, north through Helgeland, across the Arctic Circle on Saltfjellet and past Narvik. The only ferry on the way is Bognes – Skarberget (about 25 minutes). The Arctic Circle Centre on Saltfjellet is open from 1 May to mid-October.

Plan at least a week for the drive itself – two weeks if you want detours.

Suggested stages on E6

Distances from our Oslo station, measured along E6:

• Day 1: Oslo Airport – Lillehammer, about 140 km.

• Day 2: Lillehammer – Dombås through Gudbrandsdalen, about 150 km.

• Day 3: Dombås – Trondheim over Dovrefjell, about 200 km.

• Day 4: Trondheim – Mosjøen, about 390 km.

• Day 5: Mosjøen – Mo i Rana – Fauske, about 260 km, across the Arctic Circle on Saltfjellet.

• Day 6: Fauske – Narvik, about 250 km, with the ferry Bognes – Skarberget.

• Day 7: Narvik – Tromsø, about 220 km.

Route 2: through Sweden

About 1.730 km without ferries: through Sweden on the Inland Road (E45) to Gällivare, then E10 via Kiruna and over Bjørnfjell to Narvik and on to Tromsø. Fewer mountains and faster roads, but you miss the Norwegian coast. For tolls in Sweden, register the camper at ePass24 – see Toll roads.

Detours worth it

• Atlanterhavsvegen – the Atlantic Road: a detour west from E6 at Dombås via Åndalsnes and Molde (with a short ferry).

• Lofoten: by the ferry Bodø – Moskenes, or on E10 from Narvik. Tromsø to Lofoten by camper

• Senja, just before Tromsø.

In winter

E6 is open all year, but Dovrefjell, Saltfjellet and other mountain stretches can have convoys or close in storms. Plan extra days, and read Winter driving and Mountain passes.
